Rallygoers look on during the Black Deaths in Custody Protest at Town Hall in Sydney on Saturday, May 12, 2018. FIRE (Fighting In Resistance Equally) organised a protest against the high rates of Indigenous deaths in custody. According to data from Change the Record, the past 10 years have seen Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander imprisonment rates rise by 88 per cent, with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people now 13 times more likely to be imprisoned than non-Indigenous people. The death of Ms Dhu in 2016 once again brought the issue to the forefront of public discussion, 25 years after the 1991 Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody.
