Fairfax Media has appointed James Chessell to the newly created role of group executive editor – Australian Metro Publishing, responsible for the publisher’s five capital city mastheads and Life Media.
Mr Chessell will lead editorial teams at The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, The Canberra Times, Brisbane Times, WAtoday, reporting directly to Australian Metro Publishing managing director Chris Janz.
The Australian Financial Review is not included in Mr Chessell’s ambit, with its editor-in-chief, Michael Stutchbury, reporting to Mr Janz.
Mr Chessell has been promoted from the role of national editor, responsible for federal politics, business and world coverage across The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. He previously held the roles of financial services editor, companies editor, business editor and European correspondent for The Australian Financial Review. He also was a business writer on News Corp Australia’s masthead The Australian.
Mr Janz praised Mr Chessell’s ability, saying his broad knowledge of business and politics would aid in his new position.

I’m confident this will allow us to continue growing our subscriber and engaged reader base, while always safeguarding the editorial independence of our titles,” Mr Janz said.
