The Nelson Mail has moved to a four day per week morning print cycle from the first time its 151 year history as Fairfax Media NZ creates a more sustainable model for the region.
The former daily masthead will now publish print editions on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. An e-newsletter will be sent every weekday to complement the print product and ensure Nelsonians stay up to date with the region’s news.
Fairfax Media acting managing director Andrew Boyle said that the changes brought in on Monday would better support local journalism.
“When we began the conversation about how we strengthen our publishing model to reflect the modern ways people are choosing to get their news, it was reassuring to hear from the people of Nelson, advertisers and others who recognise and understand the need for change.
“It’s no secret that publishing newspapers as we have always done is no longer a viable formula in today’s media landscape. But The Nelson Mail is so closely linked with the region’s identity and even though change is necessary, it isn’t easy.”
The Nelson Mail currently reaches 71 000 Kiwis across digital and print, about 80 per cent of the region.
The changes reflect those made to New Zealand’s neighbouring Marlborough region in March.
