The 2017 Press Freedom Medals have been awarded to Michael Cameron, News Corp Australia’s national editorial counsel, and freedom of information expert Peter Timmins.

The prizes, awarded by the Australian Press Council, celebrate individuals who show an outstanding commitment to ensuring a free and open society.

Mr Cameron leads the News Corp Australia in-house legal team.Through his work, he has advocated for transparency and open justice through his actions on a variety of defamation, injunction, and suppression order cases.

Mr Cameron thanked his team who helped him achieve the award.

“I’m honoured to accept this award on behalf of the editorial legal team at News Corp Australia, whose tireless work enables the publication of articles that would be otherwise be barred by our unduly secretive courts system and plaintiff-friendly defamation laws.,” he said.

Last years awards were accepted by Kate McClymont of Fairfax Media and Paul Maley of News Corp Australia.
