NZ Herald takes Canon Award trifecta

NZ Herald takes Canon Award trifectaAt the Canon Media Awards on May 22, left to right: Shayne Currie, editor of The New Zealand Herald; Chris Reed, deputy editor of The New Zealand Herald; Jonathan Milne, editor of The Sunday Star-Times; and Roy Pilot, editor of the Taranaki Daily News.

The New Zealand Herald has dominated the winners list in the Canon Media Awards, New Zealand’s most prestigious journalism award program, taking out three major categories.

The Herald won the top award of Newspaper of the Year, Best Daily Newspaper in the Over 30,000 circulation category and its digital stablemate nzherald.co.nz won the Best Website Award. The paper also dominated the digital ranks, winning Best Digital Cross-Platform News Coverage, Best Cross-Platform Campaign, Best Innovation in Multimedia Storytelling and Best Use of Interactive Graphics.

Editor Shayne Currie also was awarded the Wolfson Fellowship, earning him the chance to attend Cambridge University.

Fairfax newspapers celebrated success with Weekly Newspaper of the Year going to the Sunday Star-Times, Newspaper of the Year (up to 30,000 circulation) awarded to the Taranaki Daily News and Magazine of the Year to NZ House & Garden. The Community Newspaper of the Year went to Queenstown’s Mountain Scene, published by Allied Press.

Organiser Rick Neville, editorial director of the Newspaper Publishers’ Association, said despite the challenges facing the publishing industry, support for the event – now in its 41st year – continued to grow, with a record attendance of 520 on the night and a list of sponsors including, for the first time, Google.

Close to 1600 entries spanning 8000 individual pieces of work were received for 64 categories. Judges across four countries, including News Corp Australia editorial director Campbell Reid, News and Fairfax veteran Garry Linnell and AAP editor-in-chief Tony Gillies, had the job of picking the top crop.

“The thing that sets the Herald apart is its depth,” newspaper judges Linnell and Reid said of the Newspaper of the Year winner.

“It is a high quality newspaper from page one to page 101 and beyond. It doesn’t have a weak link.

“Its journalism can break an international scoop one day and be unapologetically parochial the next, but its hallmark is always the rigour and quality of its information.”

The judges described the Sunday Star-Times as a “stand-out winner” of the Best Weekly Newspaper category, commending its “deeply committed investigative journalism, agenda-setting reporting, a strong sport section, an engaging eye-catching design and sections that entertain and inform”.

Reporter of the Year went to the Herald’s Jared Savage and Best Investigation to Dylan Cleaver. Charles Anderson of The Press took out Newspaper Feature Writer of the Year and the NZ Listener’s Rebecca Macfie was named Magazine Feature Writer of the Year, while Columnist of the Year went to Michele Hewitson at the Herald.

The Herald’s Brett Phibbs took out Photographer of the Year and Chris Slane from the NZ Listener was named Cartoonist of the Year.
