Waikato Times takes out top Canon award

The ambition, bold design and provocative journalism of The Waikato Times and its weekend edition have earned it the coveted accolade of Newspaper of the Year at the 2016 New Zealand Canon Media Awards.

Held in Wellington on Friday, the annual Canon awards recognise the best talent and news brands across the New Zealand publishing industry in print and digital.

Jonathan MacKenzie, editor of the Fairfax Media-owned The Waikato Times, told Stuff.co.nz the victory was a reflection of the hard work put into the paper by its team over the past couple of years.

“Staff have weathered many changes but have adapted well and continue to produce stories, photos and videos which are relevant and important to our community and readers,” he said.

NZME-owned The New Zealand Herald took home Newspaper of the Year in the +30,000 circulation category for the second year in succession, as did Fairfax’s Taranaki Daily News for the less than 30,000 circulation category.

The Waikato Times Weekend was named Weekly Newspaper of the Year and Kapi-Mana News Community Newspaper of the Year but it was The Waikato Times and its weekend edition that took out that top Canon award.

News Corp Australia’s Campbell Reid and West Australian newspaper editor Brett McCarthy judged the newspapers.

The Canon media awards are organised by the New Zealand Newspaper Publishers’ Association.
