Her role will be focus building on relationships and partnerships with media organisations to develop innovative storytelling formats, including podcasts and long-form video.
Stuff editor-in-chief Patrick Crewdson described the appointment as “another big boost for our Auckland-based team”.
Ms Hirschfeld has gained extensive multimedia storytelling experience in her career.
An experienced television presenter and producer, she joined Maori TV in 2009 as head of programming. Moving to RNZ as head of content five years later, Ms Hirschfeld led the company’s first venture into multimedia programming.
Ms Hirschfeld faced a barrage of criticism earlier this year which resulted in her resignation from RNZ.
Stuff editorial director Mark Stevens that he was after a star candidate and was able to look past the controversy.
“Clearly what happened with Carol at RNZ were widely reported at the time and there’s no secret about her departure from there. All that aside, if I was looking to recruit heavy-hitters in Auckland, I couldn’t look past someone with her talent and experience.”
