News Corp Australia group editorial director Campbell Reid said Ms Spilsbury would bring “the true understanding of a born-and-bred local” to the role.

“I am also pleased that with Jen’s appointment, three of News Corp’s five regional daily newspapers are now edited by women,” he said.

Ms Spilsbury said: “Having lived in North Queensland my whole life I know the things that are important to those who live here.”

She begins her new role at the end of April.
