News Corp Australia has appointed former Courier Mail executive Chris Jones as editor of Hobart title The Mercury, while the Sunshine Coast’s Jenna Cairney joins the Townsville Bulletin as editor following a series of editorial reshuffles.

Mr Jones has been with News Corp since 1998, most recently holding several roles at the Courier Mail and Sunday Mail as joint deputy editor and executive editor. His other Brisbane-based roles have include digital managing editor of News Queensland and editor of mX newspaper in Brisbane.

Ms Cairney joined News in November 2014 as editor of the Sunshine Coast Daily. She has previously worked at Fairfax Media’s agricultural title, The Land as deputy editor, for APN as editor of the Grafton Daily Examiner and chief of staff of the Warwick Daily News.

The new editors were promoted in a series of changes within the business, with former Mercury editor Matt Deighton moving to The Advertiser in Adelaide and former Townsville Bulletin editor Ben English moving down the coast to the Gold Coast Bulletin.
