Mr Smith has more than 17 years industry experience. He will be moving from his role as head of partnerships at global media agency Initiative, which he has held for nine months.
Previously, Mr Smith held several roles at Nine Entertainment and Network Ten, handling commercial strategies and negotiations, programmatic trading, sports rights negotiations and broadcast and digital partnerships.
Lou Barrett, executive general manager of network sales, said his experience would be crucial as News prepared to launch new projects.
“With a number of creative print and digital projects in the pipeline, I look forward to working with Ian to maximise our innovative client solutions,” she said.
