Licence number on advertising

A business must clearly display their licence number on any advertising. This includes traditional advertising and other types of promotion such as websites and social media posts.

While most tattooists are displaying their licence at their premises, many operators are failing to comply with the requirement to include their licence number in all their advertising.

Tattoo industry breaches and penalties

A person must not:

  • perform tattoo work without a valid licence
  • employ an unlicensed person to do tattooing work.

The maximum penalty is:

  • $65275 for a first offence
  • $91385 or 6 months in prison for a second offence
  • $130550 or 18 months in prison for a third or later offence.

Breaches of any licence conditions can attract the maximum penalty of $5222.
