The masthead’s owner, Seven West Media, said it was important to create a high impact and brand safe digital environment for advertisers. The new design has the added benefit of providing improved advertising opportunities, with new ad products and improved viewability.
“We deliver quality, compelling journalism in print and online every day. The experience our readers have when they consume our journalism online is important to us and this update significantly improves that experience,” said The West Australian editor Brett McCarthy.
The website is designed to better align with the look and feel of the print product. It also allows for further integration of video, following the amalgamation of The West Australian, The Sunday Times, PerthNow and 7 News Perth newsrooms.
The update is the first major change in design since the site relaunched in December 2016, when The West Australian took control of its direct to consumer digital products from Yahoo7. The site’s mobile app launched in April 2017.
The new website coincides with the departure of Seven West Media’s head of digital Dan Stinton, who will be joining the Guardian Australia as managing director.
