Former HuffPost Australia editor-in-chief Tory Maguire has reappeared at Fairfax Media, appointed today as national editor of The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald.

Ms Maguire will be responsible for leading federal politics, business and world coverage across the capital city mastheads, replacing James Chessell who was recently promoted to group executive editor of Australian Metro Publishing.

A driving force in establishing HuffPost’s presence in the local market, Ms Maquire was made redundant when the international media organisation decided to end its joint venture with Fairfax and significantly scale back operations.

Mr Chessell described Ms Maguire as “a proven leader in digital publishing with an excellent track record of leading newsrooms and producing engaging journalism”.

Ms Maguire previously has held senior editorial roles with News Corp Australia, working as a federal political reporter, night editor of The Daily Telegraph and editor of opinion website The Punch.

Her new role will commence in April.
